#005 | The Future Determines Who You Are In The Presence
Hey there!
A few weeks ago, I led a goal-setting workshop for the National Speakers Association. As both a speaker and member, these workshops always remind me how crucial it is to set goals.
Why It Matters
Setting goals isn't just about writing down what you want to achieve. It's about creating a clear direction for your future, understanding your purpose, and determining what truly matters to you. Without clear goals, we often find ourselves busy with activities that don't necessarily move us toward what we really want in life.
Think about it - The Future Determines Who You Are In The Presence
That is too powerful to neglect!
My Personal Goal-Setting Method
Step 1: Reflect & Celebrate
I start my goal-setting process by booking a table at a quiet restaurant overlooking the ocean. With a glass of champagne (or tea) in hand, I spend at least an hour reflecting on the past year. The environment matters - find a place where you can think clearly and feel inspired.
During this reflection hour, I ask myself:
-
Did I achieve my goal?
-
What went really well? And why was it a success?
-
What unexpected opportunities emerged?
-
Which projects energized me most?
-
Which clients brought the most value and why?
-
What patterns led to my biggest wins?
-
What could I have done differently?
-
What lessons can I bring with me into next year?
Step 2: Set True Goals
Next comes the crucial part - setting actual goals, not just activities. I ask myself:
-
What do I really want?
-
What's the measurable result I'm after?
-
What's my purpose?
-
Why is this a must for me?
Here's an important distinction: Getting 2,000 followers on TikTok is not a goal - it's a stepping stone. Your real goal might be becoming a recognized authority in your field or impacting more lives with your message.
Step 3: Visualize Success
I love creating vision boards - something tangible I can frame or put in my journal. This visual representation creates an emotional connection to your goals. It keeps you focused and serves as a daily reminder of what you're working toward.
Step 4: Break It Down
Once your true goals are set, break them down into smaller goals and specific activities. What do I need to do? Brainstorm a massive action plan to achieve your goal. This creates a clear path from where you are to where you want to be.
Final Thoughts
There are many approaches to goal setting - this is just my method. Feel free to steal it with pride or use it as inspiration to create your own. The most important thing isn't the method you choose - it's that you actually set meaningful goals and work consistently toward them.
Remember, it's not about the size of your goals, but the clarity and conviction behind them. What matters is that they truly resonate with what you want to create in your life.
Until next week!
